Apples and Pears Book B extends the morphemic strategy, teaching the pupil why we drop the 'e' from 'hope' when we write 'hoping', but not when we write 'hopeless'. It also covers the doubling rule, explaining why we double the 'r' in 'starring', but not in 'starless'.
The correct use of the apostrophe is a major element of Apples and Pears. In this level, contractions are introduced, as are possessives. Pupils also are introduced to silent 'e' words. A range of new spelling patterns and irregular spellings are introduced.
The diagnositic test for Apples and Pears Book C gives an indication of the range of spelling patterns taught in Book B.
